Pre-July 2001

If you've read the Who, What, and Why you understand that I wanted to build a Velocity canard Kitplane.  Prior to July of 2001, I wasn't making a lot of progress towards that goal, however.  I had divorced awhile back and was dating and doing other things that I hadn't been able to do for awhile.  I had bought a Porsche and new house, and was living in day-to-day mentality.

All of that changed when I met Eli.  She's smart, sexy, and successful.  We started dating about a year ago, and I've been thinking a lot more long term lately.  The really amazing thing is that she shares most of my interests and hobbies with me.  Sure there's the usual, running, cycling, sci-fi movies, fast cars.  Importantly she also wants a plane, and has an engineering background, and the income level to support such an endeavor.  She had thought that she might build an ultralight and/or build a general aviation aircraft, but has caught Velocity Fever along with me.

In the last couple of months I've sold the Porsche, and cleaned up my credit so that we can fund the airplane.  We'd planned on paying off all of our combined debts and putting away enough money to purchase the kit by the spring of 2002.  At the same time we were going to have a house built with a 3 car garage to serve as the shop/hangar.  Sounds like the perfect plan, eh?

Well, Velocity has decided to run a special on the Standard Fixed Gear version of their amazing flying machines in order to get more usage out of their very expensive molds.  Apparently you can get too much of a good thing, and their demand for the XL is outstripping production while the Standard molds sit idle.  Poor little lambs.  But, since (after extensive conversation with our insurance company, Avemco) we've decided that retractable gear isn't an option for us low-time pilots (no matter how cool it is) and the fact that, prior to the XL's arrival I thought the "Standard" aircraft was 'da bomb', we've decided to take advantage of the considerable savings (and take delivery ASAP!). {This conclusion was, actually, premature, see July 2001 for details.}

Meanwhile, we're still settling the details on the house (we'll use Pop's garage in the meantime - thanks Pop), and getting the financing squared away with Nafco.  The paperwork from Scott at Velocity is on the way, and we should have a delivery date set with a week, probably arriving around October.  Until then, we're planning our trip to Airventure and working on our certificates.  Check for updates on the News section of the homepage.
